The growing population today is the main problem that this world is facing. Now that Korea has begun to come out with interesting car brands and models, is Japan at risk of being booted out of first place in the Asian car manufacturing industry? One way of looking at this “competition” would be to compare a Japan used car with a Korean used car. Most drivers already know that a Japan used car if maintained well, can be depended on 10 years after it was launched. Can the same be said of a used Korean car?

Japan used car

In a forum participated by Asians from different countries, there was mixed reactions to this question. However, majority still believed that the brand new Japanese cars have the edge, and when it came down to used cars, Japanese were ahead by a clear margin.
The people who participated in the forum even placed Korean cars at par with Chinese cars, and the only reason consumers are buying Korean and Chinese cars is because they’re cheaper. Also Korean brands like Hyundai are offering tempting extended warranties which have become the clincher to close the deal. However, as many find out the value for money aspect is a bit skewed and becomes more noticeable over time.
In addition, there was an emphasis on what Japanese brand to trust over Korean cars. The majority agree that Toyota and Honda are the winners in the trust ratio. They may have had problems with some models to the point of recalls but overall, their performance has been exemplary.
On the side of those supporting Korean cars, they do believe that Hyundai has surpassed Mazda, Nissan and Subaru but has yet to equal the performance of big car giants like Toyota and Honda. The other Korean brand, Kia, on the other hand, lags way behind. One reason for the popularity of Hyundai is the fact that these other three Japanese brands are not entirely owned by Japanese anymore so the trust rating has declined.
One of the major issues Korean cars have to face is being challenged with their engineering and marketing. Many Asians do not like the idea of owning a car that is also for public use like to be sold as taxi fleets. It takes the prestige of owning your own car away.

This is a debatable question especially between husband and wife, parent and child, or male and female. However, emotions aside, there are a few traits that aptly describe the kind of driver you would feel comfortable with.
Someone who knows the mechanics – This is very important because if you don’t know the basic of how a car runs, you shouldn’t be driving especially at night or in deserted roads. This helps because if faced with a car problem, it would easier to diagnose and not be fooled by a mechanic. You may also be able to repair it yourself, at least temporarily so you can get back home.

Someone who respects others on the road – A driver who has no regard for other drivers or pedestrian is a walking time bomb.  He is likely to be reckless, cross intersections without stopping, making wide turns and speeding for the heck of it.

Someone who isn’t a clutch driver is also a danger, not to anyone. He is at risk of damaging the car and even if it is his or her car, it doesn’t make sense to not treat the car properly. Driving this way can also cause unnecessary pollution and is not eco-friendly at all.
A good driver is neither also one who does not let his license expire nor the car registration. He parks at the right places without sticking out, and pays the right parking fees. Someone who allows a minor to drive is irresponsible and should have hid driving privileges revoked. Just recently there was a story about a man who would get drunk and ask his 9 year old child to drive him home. This kind of attitude reeks of immaturity, complete disregard for the law and the safety of the child.
Thus, a good driver is neither male nor female. It also has nothing to do with experience and age. Driving well has everything to do with respecting the privilege given to drive public roads and highways, and the maturity not to abuse that right. In short, not drinking and driving; not driving while under the influence of drugs or illegal substances; not driving over the speed limit; and not caring about putting others at risk.

It is very important for you to know the road rules of different countries as they tend not to be the same. This is because in case you travel to the city then you will be able to adjust to their rules and regulations hence you avoid trouble from the authorities. Most countries have strict traffic penalties that sometimes you may end up losing your driver’s license in case of violation of the rules. Whether you drive a bus, truck, or more commonly among Japanese residents, a newly purchased Japanese used car, you have to adhere to road rules.

These article will give you the differences between driving in the USA and Japan, this information will be vital in case you intend to visit or stay in one of the cities. Although in Japan the main language is Japanese, they have also included English languages when designing the road signs so that non-Japanese speakers can easily find their way through their cities.

In Japan, vehicles are driven on the left side of the road, while the driver’s seat and steering wheel is on the right. In USA, cars are driven on the right side while the steering wheel is on the left side. The legal age for driving is 16 in America while in Japan its 18 years. In Japan when you flash your headlights it shows other drivers that they can go ahead while in the USA flashing a headlight is a sign between motorists that a patrol car is in the vicinity.

In the USA, you will have to maintain the same lane that you are driving into for example if you make a left turn you will turn on the left lane on the next street while in Japan this doesn’t happen as you can change from left to right lanes .In Japan it is against the traffic rules to pack on the road side while in the USA you can always pull on the roadside in case when your car is developing problems or stopped by patrol police.

In USA, it is a common rule that drivers should stop ay any intersection where they do not have a right of way but in Japan, if there is no stop sign then you are not supposed to stop. In the USA, many motorists own big cars as the roads can accommodate them and in Japan, there are many small cars because the roads are narrow. As a motorist it is important to know the different rules so as you fit in comfortably.

Obtaining a Japanese driver license can be rigmarole especially for those who are not a resident of Japan or speak less or no Japanese at all. With the changed law on driving license all foreigners who had driving license from another country are changing it to Japanese driving license. There is a hefty penalty for those who neglect to obey the new rules. If you are staying in Japan for more than a year, it is obligatory for you to have a Japanese driver license and not any other international driving license. In this article we are going to sum up on how to get Japanese driving license from scratch.

If you already have an international driving license, get it translated by your embassy or by JAF and take a written test, followed by a driving test in one of their used Japanese cars. In Tokyo, the written test has only 10 questions which are also available in English. So, there is nothing to worry about as the questions are very easy. In case your international driving license is void and you can’t go back to your country to renew it, you will have to pass the Japanese driving tests in order to get that license. It is not necessary for you to go to a driving class in order to apply for the license. Better avoid it as it is very expensive.

One of the main problems you’ll face in Japan is that everything is in Japanese. At the driving test centre, make sure you arrive early. The time limit is very specific and you must not miss it at any cost. You will have to carry along all the required documents to be show and submitted to the authorities. When they call you, they’d probably ask you few questions. If you are from the following countries there is no need for you to take written and practical exams as the law standards are equal or higher in these countries:

Australia, New Zealand, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Sweden , Switzerland, The Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Canda, Germany, and Austria.

At your first appointment, you will be asked to show the following documents:

  1. Your passport
  2. Any previous, expired passports
  3. Alien Registration (Gaijin) Card
  4. Home country’s drivers license
  5. Previous, expired home country’s drivers licenses (if possible)
  6. Your International Driver’s Permit
  7. The awesome translation you got from JAF
  8. A 3×2.4 (standard) photo of yourself. You can get them taken at the photo machine at the Unten Menkyo Center on the 1st floor if needed.
  9. Money – you pay for the written and practical exams separately. It adds up to about ?4000?in total
  10. Someone who speaks Japanese (if you don’t)

After this they will again give you another schedule for second appointment when you will receive your Japanese documents and license. You will have to again bring related documents mentioned above. They will keep you for a whole day to give some kind of training. Finally, you pay 1700 Yen for the documents and the license and picture will be ready within 1 hour. The license is valid for 3 years after which you will have to renew it.

So today I sat stuck in traffic on the 110 for at least an hour and 45mins. I don’t know how many of you have gone through this painfully soul crushing experience, but let me tell you on this day it was particularly painfully.

My Uncle Harry who has worked in the tv and movie industry for almost 40 years as a stuntman, slipped in the shower and knocked himself out (he is ok gentle reader fret not) so I was in my car driving to visit him in hospital, I leaned down and pressed play on the cd only to have my ears assaulted by some deafening make your brain rattle metal. Now this was not my cd, which ment it could only belong to my younger brother and to further increase my fury he had taken the car without asking…..ok so my car is only a cheap second hand Japanese import hatchback but its mine…all mine. So I knew at that moment I must destroy him. First and foremost on my mind was stopping this horrible noise, I pressed stop….Nothing happened. I pressed the power button….Noooothing happened. I mashed all the button of the control panel frantically trying to find the magical combination that would lead to blissful silence……NOTHING!!! To add final insult to the already huge injury my ears were suffering the volume control would not work…..I was beginning to become rather suspicious about the whole thing. So I had no choice but to continue driving along with this music blasting out of the speakers.

So there I sat in my car unable to move in the traffic and unable to escape the music, while getting some really strange looks from the passengers in the other cars around me.

I did the only thing I could….I listened…then I tapped along……drummed along…..played some air guitar and finally let lose my most terrifying metal roar (squeak) Don’t get me wrong I am not going to become some gothed up black hair dyed creature of the night, but I like the album a lot and I am still going to destroy my brother for the prank….but only after he takes me to the see Slayer in Hollywood on the 21st

Tonight I’m going beyond the Orange Curtain, up to Hollywood to see Franz Ferdinand at the Troubadour. They are a new band from Scotland, the latest craze of the British music press.

And they really are good. Now, my husband has had the single for a while, but he just brought home the CD last weekend. So I had a listen. And then I realized that four of the songs on the their CD have been in regular rotation on Indie 103.1, the new alternative station here in Southern California. Indie 103.1 is one of those stations that doesn’t say who in the hell was responsible for the song you just heard. So I had no idea that Franz Ferdinand were making some of my new favorite songs.

This is the band’s first appearance here in California, so, of course, the KCRW/Amoeba Records crowd will be there in droves. You know, the ones who look down on you because your clothes aren’t geeky enough, your hair not enough in your eyes. (I’m only half-kidding.) But I don’t mind that crowd. It’s a refreshing change from the OC Bimbo crowd for a night, where people look at you incredulously if you don’t have silicone body parts and actually enjoy reading novels in your spare time. (Again, I’m only half-kidding.)

;) Happy Friday!
